Welcome to Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09

The first Printemps des Poètes is going take place in Berlin from 02nd to 15th March 2009.
From 2nd to 15th March there are poetic mini-activities and larger projects in many districts of Berlin.

The idea comes from the French society Printemps des Poètes (www.printempsdespoetes.com; in French only) which propagates poetry: i.e. schooling of librarians and teachers, support with publication issuses for poets, archiving poetry and poetic activites. Each spring it calls for a festival of poetry with a given theme. The theme this year is „en rires“ („laughter“). Anyone can participate: the general public, pupils, societies, shops, cultural institutions. That is the aim: everyone becomes a poetry messenger.

Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09 is an initiative of cultural manager Catherine Launay with the support of poetry mediator Nicola Caroli. Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09 presents itself as an international and interdisciplinary action, which generates a reflection about the nature of poetry and invites people to express different ideas and images about poetry.

There is no fixed programme, Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09 is open for everyone. From public activities, spontaneous happenings to organised workshops and events everything is possible. Participating can also mean providing a space for the activities or to act as networker for Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09. An activity can last a minute, be a one-off event or take place over the whole two weeks.

Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09 takes on the public relations, you take on the organisation for your activity. You are the hosts of Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09. You decide what's poetic.

Wörter entstehen, Wörter verschwinden. Und mit ihnen meist auch der Kontext, auf den die Wörter verweisen.
Darum wollen wir 10 Worte verschenken, die wir noch kennen und benutzen. Sich dieser Worte zu erinnern bereitet uns Vergnügen. Wir empfinden das gleiche Glück beim Wiederfinden eines Wortes, wie beim Wahrnehmen seines Sinngehaltes, beim Hören seines Klanges und Geniessen seines "Duftes".
Alle Worte, an die wir uns neu erinnern wollten, sind Worte mit einem sinnlichen, materialdefinierten und naturbezogenen Inhalt. Einige Worte glaubten wir zu kennen und haben bei der Recherche uns neue und doch ältere Herleitungen gefunden, die unseren Horizont erweiterten und auch den des Publikums.
So ragen all diese Worte in unsere Zeit und wir wollen ihre Wurzeln zeigen und die Vorstellungswelt der Betrachter bereichern.

Dieses Gedicht berührt mich sehr. Zum einen, weil es mich an meine eigene Sehnsucht nach Freiheit, Leichtigkeit, nach der „Fülle des Lebens“ erinnert. Und eben auch an die u.a. inneren Zwänge und Gesetze, z.t. auch äußere Zwänge, die mir unüberwindbar scheinende Hindernisse in den Weg legen. Zum anderen weiß ich auch um die Schwierigkeiten, denen Dichterinnen und Frauen generell in islamischen Ländern ausgesetzt sind.

Workshop with Poetryfilm for people aged 10 - 16 years
Beim Poesiefilm handelt es sich um eine künstlerische Ausdrucksform, die als neuer, dritter Raum aus der Begegnung von Poesie und Film entsteht. Wir haben mit einer 4. Klasse (Kinder etwa 10 jahre alt) im Rahmen eines Schulkurses der Schlesischen 27 (www.schlesische27.de) Poesiefilme erstellt.

Today's post is mainly for those who could not have come to Zero Gallery and to take part in the evening of poetry. But before I come to this part I would like to quote a few words written by Ewa Maria Slaska who explains the idea and origins of our project.

"The title as well as the date of our meeting was carefully planned. Friday, the 13th is claimed to be a day of bad luck, and the reason for it is twofold. In the Christian countries it has a religious background. 13 is thought to be unlucky, for it was a number of people who took part in the Last Supper. And it was Judas, the thirtieth, who betrayed Jesus. When it comes to Friday, it was a day of Jesus death. In the ancient times, Friday, the 13th was supposed to bring good luck to all women. Friday was protected by the goddess of love. It was cultivated also by the Germanic people who devoted it to the goddess Freya. It is till that day, that in many languages the word for Friday stems from the name of Freya (Freitag, Friday,Fredag ), or Venus (Vendredi). 13 was also thought to be a lucky number in the ancient times. It was a number of the goddesses of the moon. The lunar calender had 13 months, and Luna was the main goddess of the ancient pre-patriarchal cultures. She had tens or maybe hundreds of names such as Isolde, Anahita, and Selene. Her symbolic animal was a cow, and there are some known images of goddesses-cows.
We have decided to celebrate this, as they say, unlucky day, with the help of the divine cow. It is also a very well know French cow, which laughs. The association was clear. We had to plan the project in the frames of French festival which theme was to be laugh. The French cow which laughs since more than half a century on the triangles of French melted cheese comes immediately to our heads. That is how we managed to combine the sacred and the profane in one poetical entity. Our idea was accepted and we've become a part of Printemps des Poetes in Berlin."

It was on Friday, the 13th that we met in the Zero Gallery. Even though we planned to start at about 8 pm we came one hour earlier to prepare gallery for that special occasion. As it turned out later on, it was worth coming a bit earlier as our first guest appeared at half past seven. The rest came on time, so that shortly after 8 pm Kasia Krenz the main poet of this evening started to read her new poem. After this very poetical beginning, it was time to the official one. The moderator and the organizer of the project Ewa Maria Slaska introduced the idea of the meeting and the poets. It was only poetry that was important after that initial part. Kasia Krenz was reading her poems in Polish, English and Portuguese. The German translations were read by Ewa and our guests-friends who participated in the meeting. For the evening with poetry and cows came mainly the inhabitants of Berlin: Poles, Italians, Israelis and Germans. One of our guest was also a Polish television, which came from Gdańsk specially for this evening. For the short breaks between the poems we prepared some sweet and salty snacks, all labelled with cows. This very nice evening with poetry ended shortly after noon.
As it turned out this famous bad luck on Friday, the 13th was just a rumour. Friday, the 13th can be claimed to be again a day of good luck. The project in the Zero Gallery went very well, in a nice and friendly atmosphere. Even the rain which started falling in the evening was warm and indicated the upcoming spring. On the Saturday's morning Berliners were woken up by the long awaited sun.

Workshops to produce concrete poetry, experimental and spoken word performance pieces
From Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th I attended Lady Gaby‘s writing workshop. There were four of us and Lady Gaby gave us writing excercises picking up on elements of our immediate environment, involving smelling and touching and giving us impossible first lines to start a text off with like „I love you“ or „Candy for the eyes“. The last day there were two more participants and we visited Wonderbar‘s cellar, including lights off for further inspiration. Lady Gaby‘s approach is personal and sensual and she lives up to her credo „I don‘t use words to hide behind, I use words to express myself.“ She brought out that same quality in us which - in a time where most voices are telling us who to be and to go anywhere rather than here - feels like the work of an urban prophet.

On Tuesday 10th I also went to Baba Berlin, an artist collective in their fabulous new rooms in Dieffenbachstrasse to see Remo Lotanos poetry collage "Our feathered friends" displayed in the window front.
Our feathered friends is a small poem accompanied with a visual element to emotionally guide the viewer.

Prompt poetisch polyglott, in Zadig (Mitte), 11. March 2009
On Wednesday 11th I went to Zadig for prompt poetisch polyglott, a reading with four poets in four languages. A great format with various cross-translations which gave the audience the chance to listen to the melody of a poem more than once and, as an audience member said, to pay more attention to the form through not understanding the language of a poem. Thanks to Patrick Suel for hosting this reading for Printemps des Poètes, Berlin09 at Zadig.

Funny Rhymes & Graffiti, in Loesje (Treptow-Köpenick), 12. March 2009
On Thursday 12th I was with Malte Reißig at Losje for a graffiti writing workshop. We looked at graffiti by three sprayers and wrote down our associations to the letter/word images and then divided into three groups to make up poems with the collected material.
A great idea of Malte, lots of enthusiastic participants and friendly hosts.

Ephemere Intervention anlässlich des Printemps des Poètes Berlin // Frühling der Dichter Berlin, Eventdauer: 02.03. – 15.03.2009

STRASSENGEDICHT….eine Erzählung, eingeworfen in Briefkästen entlang dreier Berliner Strassen
Die Szenerie: Ein ausgewählter Abschnitt entlang dreier Strassen in Berlin bildet die Szene für ein fiktionales und poetisches Ereignis. Die Geschichte des „Strassengedichtes“ wird aus der Perspektive einer Fahrradfahrerin erzählt. Anhand ihres, in der Jetztzeit zurückgelegten Weges, reflektiert sie in Bruchstücken ihre Liebesgeschichte zu einem Mann. Urbane Punkte, wie der Park, Tunnel, eine Seitenstraße und die Brücke, transformieren sich zu psychographischen Erinnerungspunkten.
Mögliches Ereignis: Das „Strassengedicht“ wird in die Briefkästen der Wohnhäuser entlang der drei Strassen eingeworfen. Die Empfänger öffnen ihre Briefkästen, nehmen einen DIN-A6-großen, blassblauen Zettel in die Hand, beginnen zu lesen und überlegen, ob der Zettel eine persönliche Notiz, ein Reklamezettel oder etwas anderes ist. Der Moment, in dem die Empfänger weiter lesen, den Zettel mit in ihre Wohnung nehmen, ihn in eine Tasche stecken oder ihn wegwerfen, entscheidet über die Wertigkeit und Wirkungsmöglichkeit des „Strassengedichtes“. Wird das „Strassengedicht“ gelesen, ergibt sich ein Moment, der zwischen Imagination, Fiktion und Wirklichkeit liegt: ist die Geschichte wahr oder unwahr, kennt man die Fahrradfahrerin vom Sehen, von Beobachtungen der eigenen Strasse oder aus der Nachbarschaft…
Der Ort: Entlang der unteren Gleimstrasse im Stadtteil Prenzlauer Berg, ab der Höhe des Mauerparks – durch den Gleimtunnel hindurch in Richtung des Stadtteils Wedding – nördlich, in die Seitenstrasse Graunstrasse einbiegend – bis zur Ecke Swinemünderstrasse – nach rechts blickend, auf zwei Wohnhäuser der Swinemünderstrasse, die direkt an der Swinemünderbrücke liegen – die Brücke, die über Bahngleise zum Einkaufscenter und zur S-Bahnstation Gesundbrunnen führt.
Publikum: Die Anwohner, die das „Strassengedicht“ erhalten, werden an einem Tag (9.3.2009) zu einem partizipierenden Publikum dieser ephemeren Intervention. Es gibt kein homogenes Zuschauerpublikum, sondern nur die einzelnen, lesenden Empfänger des „Strassengedichtes“ entlang der drei Strassen.

Cut and Remix with Daniel Kulla and his friends. Daniel brought a wild variety of books (political books, manuals, novels etc) out of which we all read together, making up a new text. Later poetry books from wOrt were used as well and it was a new experience for me to hear poetic language in this context.

Wedding-Sprengelkiez-Novel (Wedding)
On Sunday 8.3.09 Holger Haak und Lioba Reckfort took us on a tour through the Sprengelkiez and read to us from their inventive fiction-non/fiction tales of Wedding personae. All prose but interesting for poetry lovers because of the strict rules the writers impose themselves: three word sentences, inverting metaphors and being allowed to only use uplifting words, to name but a few.



Teatime at Katrin Alt‘s flat (Prenzlauerberg)
I was there with Catherine and Andrea Goetzke from New Thinking joined us. I discovered Henriette Hardenberg and the title „Im Atemhaus wohnen“ by Rose Ausländer. Lovely Madeleines and Earl Grey, mmm.

Anything else to say?, Lettrétage (Kreuzberg)
Then Catherine and I went on to Lettreetage for cutting up and reassembling the poems Loreley by Heine, Osterspaziergang by Goethe and Kinderlied für Florian by Walter Höllerer. Catherine invented a language of her own, later we discovered that both our non-sensical poems had the themes music and light. Estelle from Dasein and her friend Alexia created a stunning poem ending with „Menschen töten gern.“ In the end we all read our new poems out loud and it was smiles all round.

Off to wOrt where The Poetry of Walking was in vollem Gange. It wasn‘t our thing but it was a potentially interesting idea and there were plenty of people there who seemed to be having a good time.

Fuel: spoken word & poetry show extravaganza, Schokoladen (Mitte)
Last but not least was Fuel at Schokoladen where Lady Gaby hosted a ladies‘ poetry night especially for Womens Day, addressing a very attentive audience: „Reclaim yourself! Let lust in! Shave off your anger! Become a rockn roll nag“. I remember the following lines : Take your hands off my butt and wait until I put them there (Lady Gaby), „Is is ever evolving“ by Mad Kate and „what we fake revealing what we really want“ by Catherine Hales. Gutsy and sometimes moving spoken words that felt like fuel.

Installation für 26 Buchstaben, Bibliothek am Luisenbad (Wedding)
Am 7. März machte ich zusammen mit Sophie Watzlawick die Führung zur installation für 26 Buchstaben. Wir hatten drei Besucher, die sich zu unserer Freude hingebungsvoll den einzelnen Installationen widmeten und natürlich alles ausprobierten und mitmachten. Thank you. (Nicola Caroli)

Ear scratching, plattform.moabit (Moabit)
In the afternoon I discovered the gorgeous gallery plattform.moabit with bejewelled lemons and daffodils in the window front and various fish dangling from the ceiling. Amongst all that Petrus Akkordeon and Cornelius Hellmuth Brändle were quietly working away. Petrus Akkordeon was painting and writing his latest A3 Format illustrated poetry book which Cornelius H. Brändle was preparing for printing for his publishing company edition wasser im turm. Two brightly shining stars in the creative Berlin heaven.
Poetry is to me, among other things, an art of address and Petrus Akkordeon masters this art with word and image.

In the evening I went to K-Salon. A great space with Stuck and old wooden floors and charming back rooms. The performance taking place there did not match up to the space. We watched on a screen arty people elegantly dressed having dinner in one of the back rooms. They were reading passages from books and talking to each other in various European languages and sometimes different styles of language. They seemed to be celebrating an idea of themselves and I can only presume that we were there to add to the effect. This is the first event at Printemps des Poetes that I‘ve attended that, I‘m confident to say, had absolutely nothing to do with poetry.

El viernes tuvimos un agradable encuentro con Adrián y Manolo. Con motivo de la iniciativa Printemps des Poètes, tea time, nos reunimos a divagar sobre poesía. Hablamos de sueños, de la interpretación de los sueños, de sus imágenes y sus símbolos, de la puerta que nos abren hacia el subconsciente, de nuestra capacidad creadora, que en los mismos sueños se nos manifiesta con la mayor fuerza... acabamos nuestra tertulia con la idea o el propósito o la ambición de recoger, documentar, descubrir el material que nuestros sueños ofrecen para llevarlo después a la calidad de obra literaria. Yo creo que el año que viene nos volvemos a ver en el Printemps de Poètes. Gracias Catherine y Nicola, por organizar este maravilloso proyecto. (Carmen Rodriguez)

Paradise Exchange
Romana Zahrovsky (15) visited Nina Pagalies's Paradoxe Paradiese and wrote a text about her impressions of the exhibition. Together with Nicola Caroli she reworked her text and this is the result:

Das Paradoxe Paradies
Ich geh rein und seh das braune Herz
mit Wanduhrpendeln voller Schmerz.
Hinter mir spielt die unbekannte Musik,
ich dreh mich um und seh die rosane Wolke:
Tiere schweben, Glitzern, Blümchen.
Ich schau sie mir genau an, erkenne die blaue Flasche,
aus der die gelb-orangene Blume rauskann.
Mich gucken die Wesen an,
die ich nicht kenn,
sind es die Paradoxen?
Die mit den viereckigen Köpfen,
den chinesischen Augen?
Auf der rosanen Wolke

Tagebuch von Nicola Caroli, Freitag 06. März 2009
Am 6. März besuchte ich drei Veranstaltungen:
Workshop "Why do you laugh actually?", Schlesische 27 (Kreuzberg)
Die Schlesische 27. Eine Woche lang beschäftigten sich die Schüler/innen der 4 c der Aziz Nezin Grundschule mit dem Thema Lachen. Die Leiter der vier Workshops waren Be van Vark (Tanz), Antonia Duende (Malerei), Eike Laeuen (Fotographie), Antonia Weisz (Schreibwerkstatt). Die Schüler/innen fragten sich, wie sie andere zum Lachen bringen würden und malten Bilder dazu. Für Eltern und Lehrer brennende Iglus in der Arktis und kuschelnde Igel, für kleine Kinder Krieg mit Karotten, weil die so was mögen.
Die Schreibwerkstatt produzierte Text zum Lachen, zB ein Lachrezept, welches vor lauter Lachen nur schwer vorgetragen werden konnte, eine Geschichte von sprechenden Schuhen und vom Zaubertroll, der nicht lachenkann, weil er nix hat. Nix bedeutet in diesem Fall keine Frau und keine Kinder. Dann gab es Forschungen über die physikalischen Vorgänge des Lachens zB, die spielerisch und tänzerisch dargestellt wurden. Die Fotopräsentation von Selbstportraits der Schüler/innen brachte die Zuschauer am meisten zum lachen: „Das bin ich vor dem Lachen.“/„Das bin ich beim Grinsen und da hab ich auch grosse Zähne“/„Das bin ich beim totlachen.“
Dazulernen konnte man auch was: um Mitternacht darf man nicht lachen, weil sonst die Gespenster rauskommen. Wir wurden verabschiedet mit einer Anleitung: Man sollte immer fröhlich sein, selbst wenn man weint oder zornig ist.

Waiting room poetry
Holte ich meine Gedichtbände von der Praxis Halder/Medenbach ab. Die poetische Lektüre war gut angekommen. Die Patientinnen empfanden es als Wohltat keine Zeitschriften zum „zerramschen“ zur Verfügung gehabt zu haben und stattdessen Poesie zu lesen. Einige wenige bemängelten die Abwesenheit von „Gala“. Vertreten waren Gedichtbände von Gertrud Kolmar, Mascha Kaleko, Anne Carson, Marusha Krese, Wislawa Szymborska und 20th century book of women poets.

Soft-focus
Bei der Vernissage von Sulamith Sallman in der Musenstube gab es die Fabel „Die Katze und die Ratte“, aufgeräumt von Sulamith Sallman, Fotos und eine Stuhl/Fotoinstallation, „das hat gesessen, in die Netteln setzen, Fortsetzung folgt, Versetzung gefährdet...“. Sehr schöne Fotos, die eine entflammbare, entflammte Qualität hatten.

On the 3.3. March I attended Teatime by Catherine Launay. Lucie and Estelle of „Dasein“ were there too, we were nibbling Palmiers. Catherine read us Charades by Fernando Pessoa and we guessed mostly unsuccessfully. It was interesting to read Pessoa in French, a translation of a language (Portugese) I don‘t speak. Later I discovered a poem of which I remember the words „soleil“ and „raison“. It was about feeling one way at one time and another way at another time. I tried to find it again in the book but gave up - it‘s 2000 pages with small writing...

Sie hat verrückte Tiergedichte gereimt und Fotografiert.

Zebra
Es war einmal in Bebra
ein ziemlich trauriges Zebra.
Es litt so sehr,
denn seine Streifen war‘n quer.
Es konnte ja nicht wissen,
Wie stolz ein Zebra in Afrika
auf seine geringelten Beine war,
Und das keines sie wollte missen.


Giraffe
Warum die Giraffe sitzt,
Das bleibt ihr Geheimnis.
Ob sie ein Ei legt? Oder schwitzt?
Gar was dichtet? Es ist ungewiss!


Mamba
Giftgrün und völlig ungeniert
Die Mamba sich auf‘m Stuhl platziert.

Der Nachwuchs bei den Elefanten

Affe
Beim Anblick dieses Affen, da

Und kann‘s kaum glauben, denn ist‘s wahr?
Seine Eier sind leuchtend blau.


Leopard
Der Leopard schleicht sich heran,
hofft auf fette Beute.
Doch nach drei Stunden zeigt sich‘s dann:
Nix war‘s mit dem Fressen heute.


Löwen
Es hatte keine Chance, das Gnu,
Gegen diese Katzen.
So geht es in der Wildnis zu,
Sieh die blut‘gen Fratzen!

Response to Mallarmé
In December 2008 Poesie Vermittlerin Nicola Caroli gave a poetry workshop with the trainee teacher Virginie Allwardt at the Romain-Rolland-Oberschule. The pupils of class 11c collected their impressions to the poem Rondel II by Stephane Mallarmé and wrote their own poems.

Everyone who has an idea for a poem, sayings, or whatever occurs to him/her on the subject "laughter", is invited to leave a note. On the 14th of March the cardboard boxes will be collected, opened and all the messages packed in small bags and hung up on trees. During the last two days passers-by have the chance to pick themselves literary "surprise blossoms".

Response to Mallarmé
In December 2008 Poesie Vermittlerin Nicola Caroli gave a poetry workshop with the trainee teacher Virginie Allwardt at the Romain-Rolland-Oberschule. The pupils of class 11c collected their impressions to the poem Rondel II by Stephane Mallarmé and wrote their own poems. (To read under Documentation)

StopForPoetry
At Berlin traffic lights you find poetry: your own poems on notepaper for tearing off. Anyone who writes poetry can make a verse for the specially designed notepaper. Just write your text and fix it to the traffic lights of the city. And anyone who passes can read it, tear it off and take it with him/her and take pleasure in it on his/her way.
In the poets‘ spring, when you‘re waiting at the traffic lights anyway, take a look at poetry.
The action will be documented and shown on the website. You can also perform your poem in spoken words standing beside your paper.

Workshop "Why do you laugh actually?"

Laughter comes before language and for this reason it's one of the basic forms of human communication. Originally laughter was an aggressive posture, deriving from baring the teeth. It showed and still shows the state of your teeth and demonstrates a threat. But inside a group laughter joined people together: baring one‘s teeth to one another meant being part of a strong community and being an equal partner in a group.
Laughing has different characteristics and any kind of laughter in this world can inspire us. Laughter in the cinema, laughter that gets stuck in our throat, a fit of laughter, being laughed at and a smile.
The aim is a poetic staging, which translates the created texts into dance and integrates the created objects into what‘s happening on the stage.

Dasein:
Apotheker, a heterogeneous studio for audiovisual creation in Paris, will participate in “Printemps des poètes – Berlin09” for their Dasein project.
Dasein, which was initiated by Estelle Beauvais, will present a series of documentaries about alternative artistic ‘rendez-vous’ in and between Paris and Berlin, focussing on human exchanges and relationships that are building up networks over time. The project can be summarized in three ideas: rendez-vous, underground, Paris-Berlin. “Printemps des poètes – Berlin09” will be the pilot episode, for which Estelle Beauvais and Lucie Rezsöhazy from Apotheker will be in Berlin, as producer-video director-reporter and journalist-translator-interpreter respectively.

Three ephemeral interventions on three streets: Gleimstr., Swinemünderstr., Graunstr., Prenzlauerberg-Wedding, by Cécile Belmont, Birgit Szepanski, Sandra Truté.

In a selected area, between the former East- and West part of Berlin three streets add up to the letter P, like a Poem: Gleimstrasse, Swinemünderstrasse and Graunstrasse.
Along this imaginary and real line diverse things, times and situations are colliding: the history of the Berlin wall, the departed “border area”, the two districts Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding, and their different social structure.
The three artists Cécile Belmont (Letter Performance), Birgit Szepanski (Street Poem) and Sandra Truté (Acoustic portrait) refer to this street situation. Their Poem concept focuses on everyday life, the hidden stories, the tension between past and present and the poetic potentiality of this area in Berlin. Birgit Szepanski

Buchstaben Performance / Letter Performance by Cécile Belmont
Two individuals roam separately through the „P streets“. Each one carries a piece of a sentence printed on its clothing. They wander tirelessly looking for each other. And sometimes, they manage to find each other. Briefly, for the time of their encounter, the completed sentence is finally readable. Then, the two individuals separate again, each one leaving in his own direction. Like a bizarre love story, this work is a social allegory reflecting our need to come together. It underlines the necessary interlacing with the others’ path to constitute our personal history.

How could I write a short story about three streets? A fictional story – about a woman on a bicycle drives through the three streets, searching for her boy-friend – makes the storyline, that connecting the streets to a scene. It is an open ended story about her inner voice, her doubts, loss and her own view of the streets. Maybe this story could be a real story, maybe it has happened once – or maybe not.
Printed on a small paper, thrown in letter boxes along the streets this story becomes a “fleeting poem” for every inhabitant of the streets. The reader could imagine, if the story is real, when it happens or how the story ends. Maybe the reader will keep this slip of paper, throw it away or use it as a bookmark – the moment during the reading, before the letter box or inside the apartment, creates a short poetical situation.

An acoustic portrait of three streets through the sounds of environmental noise: Cars passing by, the noise of working machines beside the streets, screaming wheels in front of the traffic light, shouting people, barking dogs, from far away you can hear an airplane…
Overlapping fragments of sounds, that are hiding in most urban environments and that are most people perceives as an overload of the senses. Through the period of time (2th of March until 15th of March) I will accompany three streets, Gleimstrasse, Swinemünderstrasse and Graunerstrasse with my microphones. I will collect noises as a sound file and will compose them to a sound piece. I will create a Sound-Collage that includes the time and the date of the accommodation through an acoustic audio signal: A type time sound signal, similarly an announcement of an answering machine.

Ridefinizione - live reading environment by Alessandro De Francesco (poetry) and
Paolo Ingrosso (laptop voice processing)
The texts of Ridefinizione have been originally written in Italian by Alessandro and are now published in five languages in some 15 internationally renowned poetry reviews. In STEIM sessions the texts have been recorded (Shure condenser microphone, Fireface 800 audio hardware on Macintosh) live by Alessandro, Paolo and the Dutch artist Vincent W. J. van Gerven Oei, then processed by Paolo on a Max/MSP patch. This patch, conventionally called “pattern gate”, has been developed and implemented by Paolo specifically for Alessandro’s voice and way of reading. The purpose was to enhance the semantics of the texts trying to produce an advanced poetry–voice–machine live interaction device. This procedure is far away from “sound poetry” tradition, since the texts were previously written not to be performed. Moreover, Alessandro’s reading and Paolo’s treatments have to be conceived as a reading environment instead of a performance, that is to say an audio environment where the perception of poetry is the main aspect, much more than the performers themselves.

Vergissmeinnicht (Forget me not)
Walk-in installation to the poem Vergissmeinnicht (Forget me not) by Hans Arp as part of Nina Pagalies‘s solo-exhibition "Das paradoxe Paradies". One enters a truly surreal creation in which shifty characters encounter unsuspecting fabulous animals, dustcarrying shadow hoods go about their dubious business and sailing vessels start knitting.

Wedding-Sprengelkiez-Novel
Collective of writers in Wedding: Holger Haak, Reinmar Schott, Lioba Reckfort
Karl Wuppke runs riot.
Karl Wuppke is an original and the concierge of the house in Sprengel street 28, whose residents and stories we will get to know during our little literary trip. There are for example the philosophy student Thomas Bruch, who is in love with the vendor of the bakery. Joe Kuhl, who earns his living as a taxi driver and doesn't say no to beer and noisy music. A resolute Miss Marple in the person of Mrs. Kapinski mustn't be missing. She traces her lost piece of furniture by the second-hand dealer round the corner. This and more will be there to discover together, when we'll explore the district reading passages from the "Sprengelkiez-Novel" at the original locations.

Bios

Katrin Alt, was born in Celle and lives in Berlin since many years. After finishing her study of Visual Communication at the Berlin University of the Arts she works as a graphic designer. Besides she works with photography and illustration.

Anders A. Bachmann is born in Leipzig and lives in Berlin since 2001. After finishing study in 2007 he works as Illustrator and Graphic-Designer. Together with Tina Wamsganz he explores his artistic ideas.

Cécile Belmont (1975) is a French visual artist based in Berlin. She studied textil design in Paris and painting in Buenos Aires. Her work ranges from wall installation, embroideries, clothing to urban interventions, acting in this way in different contexts and relationships to the audience. From the street into the gallery and from the gallery on to the street.

Missoum Boumedienne is an Algerian journalist, who's been living in Germany since 1994. He is co-founder of the Algerian league for human rights in Algeria. Missoum writes poems in French.

Nicola Caroli born in Freiburg 1965, emigrated to Great Britain and returned to Germany in 1996. Since then she's been creating spaces for poetry, mostly in the form of perfomances. She also passes poetry on to children and young people and intends to do lots more of that.

Marie Chartron after the study in philosophy and art, Marie Chartron specializes in sound. She is working for film, video and installation.

Alessandro De Francesco poet and sound artist, was born 1981 in Pisa, lives in Lyon. Besides writing and developing multimedia concepts, he studied Philosophy, Literature and Music in France, Germany and Italy. His first book of poetry, Lo spostamento degli oggetti, was published with Anterem in January 2008.
De Francesco presented his work in several cities all over Europe and in the U.S.

Gaëlle de Radiguès born in 1972 in Brussels. After studying Economics, she changes direction to start photography. She works 4 years as Culture management for Brussels European Capital of Culture 2000 where she develops her interest for the concept and the reality of cities.
In 2001 she moves to Berlin where she studies theology and attends as well the class of Dieter Appelt at the UdK. Between 2003 and 2006, she initiates and curates different projects in her neighborhood in Neukölln (cinema, gallery, dance event). Actually, she works on a book for children about the city of Berlin.

Theodor di Ricco Art study in Sacramento and Paris. Since 1987 curator and manager of the Gallery SoToDo, which has been invited to various cities in the world; Seoul, Montreal, Paris, Innsbruck, Sacramento and Berlin. Participation for more than 20 years at various performance and visual art events around the world. Author of the novel 'Sick Sakraments' 2004.

Ricardo Domeneck was born in the state of São Paulo, Brazil and lives in Berlin. He has published the volumes of poems "Carta aos anfíbios" (2005) and "a cadela sem Logos" (2007), and works with video and sound poetry. He is the co-editor of Hilda Magazine (Germany) and Modo de Usar & Co. (Brazil).

Jessica "Jesse" Falzoi born in Hamburg in 1969, writer; member of "The Return of the Cowboy Philosopher".

Ariadne Ghabél Ariadne‘s roots are in Shiraz, Georgia and Germany. She studied law and became a breath teacher and life-coach. Her passion is transformation, through breath, love and poetry.

Anna Görner Freelance multi-media designer since 1998. Lives and works in Berlin, sharing her experiences with students and in workshops.

Katia Hermann is coming from Paris, living in Berlin since 2001. She is curating exhibitions, translating movie projects and she loves to organize events about art. She paints, film and takes pictures when she has time left.

Tobias Herold born 1983 in Bad Mergentheim, lives and works in Berlin. He attended literature and law studies at FUB, mainly writes poetry. One of his current projects is an essay about the patterns on seats in Berlin public transportation vehicles; he co-curates the series of theory-events Schleusen at ausland. Herold's first book of poetry, Kruste, will presumably be published in September 2009 as part of Edition Lyrik der Jahrtausendwende at Elfenbein Verlag.

Paolo Ingrosso guitarist and composer of contemporary and electroacoustic music, was born 1980 in Pisa, lives in Bologna. Having graduated in classic guitar, electronic music (both Milan) and Composition (Conversatory of Bologna), Ingrosso appears as guitarist in concerts and composes different pieces of music for both classical and modern instruments that were performed or recorded by soloists and groups in diverse contexts in Italy and abroad. Interdisciplinary collaborations.

Georg Kakelbeck Painter, lyric poet, streetartist. He brings poetry to urban environment. Since 1999 happenings with Petrus Akkordeon and publishing under the name of "Kunstkampfverlag".

Odile Kennel was born in the southwest of Germany as a product of a German/French jumelage and lives in Berlin. She has published "Wimpernflug" in 2000, and is co-editor of the French/German magazine La mer gelée. She has translated poets from French and Portuguese, for example Jean Portante, Adília Lopes and Arnaldo Antunes.

Brigitte Krämer born in Tübingen. She lived in Germany, Holland and Ireland and now she lives in Berlin. Her present occupations are sound composition, programming and photography.

Catherine Launay was born in Châtellerault, Frankreich. She's working with artists from different fields: performance, dance, sound art, theatre, music. Current projects are: Stimuline by Lynn Pook and Julien Clauss, France - Berlin; Wüste Wüste, after the novel Autumn in Peking by Boris Vian, a multidisciplinary opera à la low-fi, winner of "operare 08" in Berlin.

Remo V. Lotano studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design before coming to Berlin where he continued his education at the Technical University of Berlin.

Tom Mars born 1975 in Paderborn and living in Berlin since 1998. He performs in reading groups and for Poetry Slams and organizes suchlike events. In his texts he likes to highlight hitherto unknown parallel worlds to his audience. In 2000 his novel "Berlin City Disco Boys" was published by rosa Winkel.

Kerstin Parlow born in Germany, studied Photography in Mt Carmel, USA, and Bielefeld.
After living in Australia and Egypt, she settled in Berlin ten years ago, where she has since worked as a photographer and writer. Current projects include Omi und Fritz, a book featuring correspondence between her grandparents during the war, as well as a photography book about Berlin.

Paradox Paul born London. Reluctant host of experimental reading events and other misadventures. Failed at school, failed in love; writes intermittently about great themes and useless ones. Moved to Berlin in ‘92, squatted houses, smoked cannabis, painted walls, invented Berlin Big Chairs, opened Wallywoods. Plays keyboard with a hammer, owns no pets and sleeps a lot. Is now writing his memoirs and looking for a wife to read them to.

Céline Robinet is writer and as KaCoSónia the french slam-poetin in Berlin. Two short story books have been published in France. Her texts which are full of spirit and pwerfully eloquent have also appeared in numerous anthologies, for example in Blah! anthology of Slam.

Hamid Saidji is an Algerian-French filmmaker, actor and writes poems and short stories.

Sulamith Sallmann was born in 1971 Saxony, Germany. She worked as a stage hand, secretary, online-editor, pedagog, photographer and for various TV/Stage/conference jobs etc. Sulamith‘s first camera took the place of her diary and she‘s been taking photographs ever since.

Sandra Santana was born in Madrid, Spain. She has published "Marcha por el desierto" (2005) and "Es el verbo tan frágil" (2008). She is the co-founder of the collective El Águila Ediciones which investigates alternative media poetry. She also collaborates with Miguel Álvarez-Fernández in sound poetry and installations.

Jeanette Schaefer born in Berlin. Since 1996 she works as a web designer and photographer.

Annton Beate Schmidt born in 1968, in Frankfurt/Main, she works as an artist and author in Berlin. She opened up a new studio in 2008 where she regularly presents her pictures. Her showings are also integrated into more comprehensive space draughts.

SP 38 was born in the Normandy, France. Since 1995 captived in Berlin.
"He paints like a human photo copier, uses only 4 colors (blue yellow red & blue), 4 anti-depressive ideas & movements, urban poetry in the street.

Damien Spleeters was born in Charleroi, Belgium. He lives in Paris. He published the novel « Transere » in 2006, the Booklegs « AMEN » (poetry) in 2005, « ouroboros » (poetry) in 2008 and « La Prophétie » (theater) in 2008. He has performed in Brussels, Paris, Berlin, Quebec, and in festivals such as the Maelström FiEstivals.

Birgit Szepanski photographer and writer. Born in Hagen, living and working in Berlin since 2000. Graduation in fine arts and art management. She writes short stories, poems and creates b/w photographs. Her themes are: the everyday-life in cities, the ephemeral side of cities and hidden stories behind negligibility. She makes site-specific exhibitions in Berlin and writes catalogue texts for artist. Current projects are: writing a graduation on “the narrative city”; “Street Stories” – site specific projects with stories to be read on streets, and “Underground Stories” – short stories to be read during subway journeys.

Sandra Truté composer, sound researcher, noise collector and visual artist. Born (1978) in Berlin. She studied Fine Art at the Weißensee in Berlin and went between 2005 and 2007 to do her Masters at the National Academy of Art in Bergen. She is now living in Berlin again and is listening to the city - this gigantic noise generator.

Tina Wamsganz lives as a freelance writer and mixed media performer in Berlin. Currently she is working on her debut novel in context with the textwerk-Seminar of the Literaturhaus München. In her art she is interested in reality as a ritual, in existence as an autoplastic phenomenon.

Cosima Weiter lives and works in Berlin. She writes in french and german, inventing a language on the midway of her favourite ones. As a poet, she often reads her works in France and in french speaking Swiss. She takes part in the magazine BoXon since 2001. She studied electroacoustic composition in Bernard Fort’s class an composes poems in which she mixes recorded sounds with her live voice.
